Decision Registry


What is the registry of decisions?

Since November 1, 1992, the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (CCRA) requires the National Parole Board (NPB) to maintain a registry of its decisions along with the reasons for those decisions. Anyone may request, in writing, a copy of these decisions.

What is it's purpose?

The purpose of the registry of decisions is to contribute to public understanding of conditional release decision making and to promote openness and accountability.

Who can obtain decisions from the registry?

Anyone who demonstrates an interest in a specific case may write to the NPB to ask for a copy of the decision made in that case.

How do I obt a in a decision from the registry of decisions?

The Request for Registry of Decisions Form (PDF 52 Kb) must be filled in a nd sent to the NPB region a l office serving the a re a where the offender is imprisoned or under supervision ( any regional office may be contacted to find out where to direct the request).

The request must describe the re a son for the requestor's interest, for ex a mple: a member of the offender's f a mily; a community volunteer; the offender's a ssist a nt; the victim; the investig a ting police officer; a medi a represent a tive; etc.

Can access to the registry of decisions be gr a nted for research purposes?

Anyone may apply to obtain decisions from the registry of decisions for research purposes. All names and identifying information will be removed from these decisions.

Rese a rch requests should be sent to the Policy, Pl a nning a nd Oper a tions Division a t the National Office of the NPB. Such requests should provide a detailed explanation of the proposed research. In some cases, the NPB may contact researchers to obtain additional information about their request.

Can information be withheld?

The CCRA allows the NPB to withhold information that could reasonably be expected to:

  • jeopardize the safety of any person
  • reveal a source of information obta ined in confidence; or
  • affect adversely the reintegration of an offender to society as a law- abiding citizen, if released publicly
